Happy Friday! What a lovely day to talk about cats!

Berkeley Humane opens every Friday at 11 AM to introduce animals to potential adopters.

Interested in a cat? We have some great ones looking for homes this weekend! Stop by to talk to our Adoption Counselors about which cat might be the best fit for you.

Recent adopter Amanda Stempson could tell you about the adoption counseling process: she adopted a beautiful cat named Prairie Flower just this month! We're proud to see how well Prairie Flower, now named Eleanor, has instantly adapted to her new home. Take a look at this lovely lounging lady:

And would you believe this is Eleanor's first day in her new home? Amanda tells us:

"We were so happy to bring home Prairie Flower today! She's acclimating well to her new home and new name: Eleanor. Thanks, Berkeley Humane!"

You are so welcome, Amanda! We'll sign off with one more soulful picture of Eleanor's astounding eyes by Berkeley Humane photographer Michael Goldberg.

It's Woof Wednesday again! Hope you and your pets stayed cool during the warm days this past weekend. Seems we are already back to normal temperatures around here.

Here at Berkeley Humane, we love hearing about the animals that find great homes and how they adapt to their new surroundings.

Especially when they find new skills like opening mail and such. For example, here's Loki, formerly Chip, who has quite the talent for opening mail! And it seems he's rather enjoying it! Who knew we had such skilled pup amongst us?

Here's what Krista, Loki's adopter, told us on Facebook:

"I adopted Chip, now known as Loki, several weeks ago. He's doing great! Here he is, helping me open mail, LOL. Thank you guys for letting me give him a furever home!"

Here's to you Loki and Krista and to many many happy days of opening mail!

We love hearing from our past graduates and their adopters. Photos are, of course, always welcome!

Interested in finding your own skilled companion? Come visit us at Berkeley Humane, Friday through Sunday from 11am to 5pm. Our website has great information on the adoption process and our available cats and dogs. Hope to see you soon!

Berkeley Humane staff and volunteers are lucky enough to meet some beautiful cats and dogs. Beauty isn't necessarily an indicator of personality — or purrsonality, in the case of today's featured pet — but it's hard to deny the arresting good looks of some of our adoptable cats and dogs.

Today's Feline Friday post shows off the loveliest, sleekest cat we've seen in a while. Handsome Dwight spent some time at Berkeley Humane while he waited for the right family.

That family turned out to be Matthew Lundberg, who gave Dwight the regal name of Mischa and recently posted an update on Berkeley Humane's Facebook page:

"We adopted "Mischa," the kitty formerly known as "Dwight" last week, and we already love him to the moon and back. He loves to be held, is very curious, and loves to play. Thanks again."

Just take a look at that fur! Mischa is a handsome cat indeed!

If you're looking for a handsome pet to adorn your happy home, we sure have some beauties. Take a look at our adoptable cats or dogs and then stop by the shelter to meet them this weekend! We're open Friday through Sunday from 11 AM to 5 PM. Our trained staff and volunteers will help match you to the right pet.

Woof Wednesday is a fine time to share tales of happy dog adoptions and get a peek into their new lives!

Everyone's heard the phrase "smart cookie," but today we want to tell you about a smart puppy!

Mike was a tiny dog when he stayed with us at Berkeley Humane, but that small frame houses a big brain. Mike is now named Olaf, and we know he's a smart cookie -- this perspicacious pup even wears a graduation mortarboard!

Adopter Cinnamon Ramirez got in touch with us on Facebook to update us on  an adorable picture of her little scholar, Olaf:

"It’s been 4 1/2 months since we took Olaf (Mike) home and he’s just the best! He graduated his dog training class last week. :) Thought I would share his progress with you."

"I love my baby boy I took home! My kids named him Olaf! :) Thank you! Kids are in love!"

We're so happy that Cinnamon and her happy kids discovered Olaf's talents. Berkeley Humane sends its best wishes for lots of obedient sits, stays, and heels!

Interested in discovering your dog's hidden talents? Berkeley Humane offers a wide range of training classes. Give your puppy a head start in puppy Kindergarten, learn basic commands and best practices in basic obedience, or explore your dog's capacity for tracking in a nosework course. We also offer special classes to address issues like leash reactivity, crating, and even a simple refresher course on basic commands like sit, stay, and come.

There is one perfect dog, and every dog owner has him or her!

Today's Woof Wednesday is about a storybook-perfect human/dog bond that grew out of an adoption during Maddie's Pet Adoption Days in May. (You can read more about that event here. The story includes a photo of the adoption board where staff keep track of adopted animals' names, and today's featured pup is on that board under her old moniker!)

When Laura Blum met Quinoa the dog at Berkeley Humane, she decided that the two of them were right for each other.

Here's their very first picture together just after the adoption was finalized:

Going home!

Laura decided Quinoa was more of a Pebbles, and the two began the process of getting to know one another. This included some surprising discoveries -- some delightful, some a little scary. Here's what Laura shared with Berkeley Humane in June:

"She's a pretty sick cookie right now. She has a bladder infection on top of her cold and fractured tooth, and GI upset from being on so many medications. She's hanging in there though, and coming out of her shell more every day.

I renamed her Pebbles. I discovered that minus some accidents due to the bladder infection she's actually house trained. She's mostly been sleeping (I'm guessing because she's so sick), but perks up on walks and at the prospect of cuddling on the couch.

She's very vocal now and will whine about things like walks when she's sleepy and it's cold out - I think it's adorable. She doesn't know anything except "come" right now, so we'll definitely take advantage of Berkeley Humane's small dog obedience class when she's had her tooth out and is feeling better."

Thanks to Laura's diligent training, Pebbles did indeed graduate (at the top of her class!) from Berkeley Humane's Small Dog Basic Obedience Class under the direction of Berkeley Humane Dog Trainer Nancy Frensley. You can learn more about that class and others on our website.

"I made Nancy take a "graduation" photo of the two of us, then cried a little bit when I got home because I was so proud of Pebbles."

Laura should be proud of herself, too. Paying close attention to Pebbles' medical needs paid off, and as of late August most of those early physical issues were looking much better.

"She's completely over her cold and bladder infection (and the GI problems caused by taking multiple antibiotics). She slept pretty much nonstop the first 1.5-2 weeks that I had her.

She went in to have her tooth extracted and they messed up something with her breathing tube and had to abort the surgery (scariest phone call I've ever gotten). She's set to go in again early next month because they didn't want to put her under general anesthesia again for a while."

Relinquishing control of your heart to a pet can be the best thing in the world, but it can be frightening when that pet is ill. Berkeley Humane offers post-adoption medical support to help new adopters assess their new pet's needs and get the right care. We want every adoption to be a happy and healthy one.

Pebbles is lucky to have found a new home with an owner who expands her horizons with lots of outdoor excursions and trips all over the dog-friendly Bay Area! Laura shares with us:

"She comes everywhere (that I can legally take her) with me.

She used to come on BART and to work with me when I worked in a dog-friendly office. One of the photos that I included is of her sleeping under my desk at work."

Laura and Pebbles are busy exploring everything the world has to offer them. We're also sharing a picture of Pebbles at the Point Isabel dog park. Laura tells us it's Pebbles' favorite new hangout spot, and the blissed-out doggy smile on Pebbles' face seems to confirm it!

"She's just such a wonderful, cuddly little dog. I feel like the luckiest person in the world!"

"I just love her."

It's pretty clear that Pebbles absolutely adores you, too, Laura.

Congratulations on your happy adoption and all the adventures you two share! We wish you the best of luck with Pebbles' upcoming surgery. May you have many more joy-filled years together.

Happy Feline Friday! Are you ready for the long Labor Day weekend? We hope it brings you extra time to spend with your pets!

Now, we don't want to be-Labor the point, but we have some pretty great animals at Berkeley Humane and nothing makes us happier than seeing potential adopters meet their purr-fect pet. As we head into the Labor Day holiday weekend, we're happy to share with you another great adoption story that includes that special moment when adopters find the right new pet.

See, we have a tradition at Berkeley Humane: when an adoption is finalized we snap a picture and later post it on our Facebook page. Each month, these "Going Home" albums show excited adopters about to take their first step outside with their new pet.

Today's wonderful adoption story includes one of those "Going Home" pictures along with an update. The McIntyres sent us this note about Samantha, former Berkeley Humane graduate:

"Thank you, Berkeley Humane, for this little gift of "Sammy" (Samantha). She was formerly "Birdo". She is a little spitfire but oh so sweet! We are over the moon about her. She is adjusting well in her new forever home."

As you can see from this photo, Sammy found herself in loving arms to snuggle and rest. Thank you for the update, McIntyre family!

Interested in adopting your own feline this weekend? Visit Berkeley Humane at 9th and Carlson from Friday through Sunday to meet your new best friend.

Here's a quick Woof Wednesday lift to your day: A mid-week update on one of Berkeley Humane's recent adoptees!

Often when we update Woof Wednesdays and Feline Fridays, we not only update you on the animal's happy new home, but also its new identity in the world. But sometimes the name an animal bears while at Berkeley Humane just suits them!

Today's adopted dog is one such animal: in his new home he's kept the same name that our staff bestowed upon him: Kashi!

No longer just the name brand of your favorite whole grain cereal, Kashi is now a quadruped pedestrian of Frontage Road and caretaker of small plushes.

Take a look at this peaceful pup soaking up the sunshine and his family's love:

Kashi and his new family taking in the best of the East Bay

May your bed be plush and warm, Kashi!
As you can see, Kashi's family loves him. They report that he is already housebroken and "so well-behaved."

Congrats, Kashi, and thank you to Kashi's new family!

Looking for resources to train your dog? That's (one of many reasons) why Berkeley Humane is here! We offer a wide range of dog training and behavior classes, from getting to know your puppy in Puppy Kindergarten to the refined art of nosework. Check out the full array on our Dog Training page.
